Under the BMW EfficientDynamics concept are summarized a number of technical innovations, which lower fuel consumption while increasing performance effect.

All petrol engines are available in this context to the radiant guided direct injection (High Precision Injection) redenominated. The 325i, 330i and 335i can reach the EU4 emissions standard, starting in March 2009, the 318i and 320i, the exhaust emission standard EU5 reach. Due to the EU5 in vehicles in the NEDC test cycle, the fuel used with a higher percentage of ethanol (E10) and thus lower the energy density increases nominal consumption by 0.5 liters (318i) and 0.4 l (320i).

The diesel models have already since 2006 a particulate standard. The 318d, 320d (except xDrive all-wheel drive) and 330d (with and without xDrive) reach the EU5 exhaust emission standard, with the 320d xDrive and 335d only the EU4 standard. For the 330d without automatic transmission is an additional blue filter performance available through a storage catalyst reduces the nitrogen oxide emissions and thus the EU6 standard compliance.
